AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, this is our chance to make a big difference and show other universities how strong Dean's support is here at AU:

Did you really want to go to Iowa or New Hampshire and did not get a chance?
Still want to help the campaign in a BIG way?

From January 30th to February 1st, the campaign needs YOU in Delaware. We have
one of the most competitive February 3rd primaries and are in a statistical
dead heat with the Lieberman and Clark campaigns.

We are chartering a bus from Washington, DC that will leave town no later than
5PM on Friday, January 30th. We will return to DC by 5PM on Sunday, February
1st. YOU WILL BE BACK IN TIME FOR THE SUPER BOWL.

Meet Dean supporters from all over the mid-Atlantic and help us place first in
the first state. There will be students

We will house you University of Delaware students.
We will feed you three times a day.
We will entertain you with a special guest on Friday or Saturday night.

Thursday Phone Banking

Dean's Higher Education Plan

Governor Dean Announces A Better Deal For Higher Education
Dean higher ed plan provides financial incentive; quadruples AmeriCorps

HANOVER, NH-Democratic presidential candidate Governor Howard Dean, M.D., today announced a plan to ensure that the dream of a college education is never denied because of a family's financial situation, that students are given incentives to complete high school and apply to college, and that debt does not prevent graduates from serving the community in a job they love.

"Today's higher education system simply doesn't work because our political process has stopped working for all Americans. To pay for his reckless tax cuts, President Bush's administration had to cut Pell Grant funding for 84,000 students. Hundreds of thousands of students will be getting smaller grants. It under-funded financial aid by $1.4 billion. And the administration stood by and watched as Congress cut funding for AmeriCorps, giving students even fewer opportunities to pay for higher education," Dean said in a speech here at Dartmouth College.

"When he signed the Higher Education Act of 1965, Lyndon Johnson said, 'A high school senior anywhere in this great land of ours can apply to any college or university in any one of the 50 states and not be turned away because their family is poor.' But that vision is far from fulfilled," Governor Dean continued.

"When I am president, I will seek real change in the way we approach higher education. And I will make a fundamental commitment to our children: that every one of them will be able to afford to go to college if they commit to work hard, stay in school and graduate from high school," Dean said.

His plan, the Dean College Commitment, provides hope to high school students and their families by broadening access to college by ensuring that, not later than middle school, students would develop a plan for their futures, including the courses they need to take in high school; families would receive an advance determination of their eligibility for federal financial aid; and they would have assistance in developing a savings plan for college expenses.

Then, upon graduating from high school, students would:

Have access to $10,000 per year for postsecondary education-either traditional college or high-skills career training.
Never have to pay more than 10% of their income after college on student loan payments (and even less if they enter service fields like nursing or teaching in high need ares).
And, if they work and make these loan payments for 10 years the loans will be paid in full.
Those who enter public service professions will get a special bonus: Nurses, teachers, social workers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians in high need areas would never pay more than 7 percent of their income.

The plan would also benefit Americans already in the workforce who are still making payments on student loans. If your payments on your undergraduate loans are more than 10% of your income, you will be eligible for a tax credit.

In addition to the public service incentives, Dean will boost opportunities for Americans to serve their communities while earning additional money for education, by increasing the number of AmeriCorps positions to 250,000. Of these, 50,000 will be dedicated to new "Frontline" public safety national service programs, which will provide opportunities for young Americans to serve for two years as firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and forest and park service rangers, enhancing our nation's safety and security.

"Students who normally wouldn't be able to pursue public service careers -- because they'd be saddled with debt -- will now be able to follow their dreams after college. It will also encourage students to enter fields like nursing and teaching where our country is facing shortages," Governor Dean said.

Governor Dean's proposal would give a quarter of a million Americans the opportunity to serve through programs like Teach for America and City Year.

Between the Dean College Commitment and the expansion of AmeriCorps, every American who wants to will be able to pursue a national service career without the fear of crushing loan payments.

"One of the greatest tragedies of the Bush administration has been their ability to destroy hope in this country. Americans have forgotten that there can be a better life, a better future, a better country than the one we have now. We cannot let this happen. We have always moved forward through the hope that is born of struggle and hardship. We can create our own opportunity in America again," Dean said.

"Opportunity makes all the difference. Today in America, one child out of five is born into poverty. What a country we would be if we refused to let that child die in poverty," Governor Dean said. "Ensuring that the dream of a college education and the ability to serve our country can be a reality for all of our children will go a long way toward ensuring opportunity for all."

Howard Dean's Birthday Bash

Hello everyone, sorry for another email, but this is REALLY BIG! This coming Monday the 17th is Howard Dean's birthday, and he is celebrating it right here in D.C. at the Capital City Brewing Co. and guess who they contacted for volunteers? Generation Dean AU. So they can only take 30 volunteers about max, so I need you to email me RIGHT AWAY if you are available at drum724@aol.com. Everyone that is going to volunteer needs to come to a quick meeting at the Capital City Brewing Co. this Saturday morning at 11 a.m. and then the actual Birthday Bash is from 9-11 p.m. but we will get there at 8 p.m. to volunteer!

Secondly, I need anyone who is going to volunteer at Virginia HQ to email me tonight to let me know so I can tell them how many are coming!

Lastly, the General Assembly is having a special meeting tommorow at 11 p.m. on the couches in MGC. It is an attempt to reach out to the students to help make their bylaws and get feedback! Please show up and get involved in YOUR Student Government.

Tommorow there is an incredible opportunity to actually help out at the Dean for America HeadQuarters in Virgninia. If you are interested, meet in the LA Quad at 11 a.m. tommorow. From there take the shuttle to the metro, Red line to Metro Center and then the Orange Line to East Falls Church metro stop. Go out to the right side and there is a bus stop for the "George" which is a local bus. That will take you to the 200 Park Ave. stop which is right by the DFA HQ!! When you get there have someone contact Jenn Boysko who is one of the state directors. Her phone is 571-344-2062. Then you can help out at the office for as long as you would like and then take the Metro back to AU.

Things to Think About, From Joe

Hey guys,

First, I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their tremendous work in getting names on Sunday. Because of our recent efforts, we are well ahead of our nearest competition for the top spot. We are the largest Dean group in the country, and I am proud to say that it is all because of our commitment to work together as a team.
In these past few weeks, we have raised visibility ten-fold, increased our membership by more than two hundred names, and have renewed our energy and enthusiasm for our common goals. You are some of the finest people I have ever worked with, and I am greatful that I had the chance to meet you all.
I remember the day David told me he was interested about starting a Dean club on campus as if it was yesterday. We discussed briefly his goals for AU, and what he hoped to accomplish. And It is with that same eagerness and zeal that we continue our efforts.

Let us continue our fight to see that every American, particularly children, get health care in this country.

Let us continue our fight to repeal Bush's unnecessary tax cuts to the super rich.

Let us continue our fight in ensuring that justice prevails, and fairness and equality are supreme.

Let us continue our fight against bitter divisiveness, even if it is within our own party.

Let us continue our fight to make change, not for change's sake, but for the progress of all mankind.

Hey guys...Nathaniel and Neal and I signed up to help out with the Patty Morrissey campaign on Tuesday, 11/4, but one of our professors is giving us a hard time, so we can't go. But the campaign really needs people, so if you can miss class or don't have class on Tuesday, PLEASE volunteer to help out. You will leave campus sometime Monday night, stay over at the headquarters, and work all day Tuesday. You get $50 for your help, plus the opportunity to help defeat a reactionary Republican who spends his time sending plastic fetuses to other members of the Virginia House of Delegates to promote his anti-choice agenda. Mock Iowa Caucus Tomorrow

I could not find too many details about this, but supposedly there is a mock Iowa Caucus tomorrow at 9 AM in Ward 2. The Clark and Edwards people have been organizing, and I think we should have a presence at it as well, to show how much support Dean has here at AU. So I know it is early in the morning, but please try to come...if I get any more information I will post it here.

The Great Disconnect: Why Young People Don't Vote

We will leave the LA quad at 6:30pm and leaflet outside the theatre for half an hour or so. We hope all of you who have t-shirts wear them to this event.

Matt Gross form the Dean Campaign will be at the forum. This is another great opportunity to get Dean visibility out there.

Woo-hoo! I got really worried because it was down and I could not fix it, but it appears to be working fine, and without the banner (they gave us a complimentary upgrade, at least for now). Anyways, I will try to get around to changing the colors and adding pictures in the next few days...I planned to do that today, but my first priority was getting the site working again.

Next General Meeting

Our next general meeting will be held on Thursday October 23rd in Ward 1. Please bring a friend as this is going to be a very informal meeting giving us all a chance to break up into committees and strategize about:

Our GOTV (get out the vote) effort, helping GWU, meetups, rallys, how we're going to get Dean to AU, and how we can get the name Howard Dean on everyone's lips at AU and the surrounding area.

We'll also be discussing the living wage issue, which we are now helping with on campus. This coming week is crucial to that issue. More to come regarding living wage this weekend.

So remember THIS THURSDAY AT 11:00pm in Ward 1 Our 2nd general meeting.
